Title: The bridge project, life cycle assessment and green polyethylene: How to build a sustainable future for Brazil in the context of the FWE-NEXUS

Abstract:

Brazil is one of the greatest producers of agricultural products in the world and has expanded and intensified its agricultural capacity greatly over the past decades. Combined with the effects of global warming this presents unique challenges for Brazil to overcome in the present and future. Specifically, regarding land, water and energy use. These problems are generally individually approached as simple management problems, but on closer examination deep relations can be found between the components. This is referred to as the Energy-Water-Food Nexus. The connection between the elements in the nexus make good policy in the network of government agencies difficult. The methodology of Life cycle assessment might be a great help in making good policy. Specifically, the approach on quantifying the impact of the novel sugarcane based ‘green’ polyethylene will be presented.

Erik Goverde is a student in the master program: Chemistry – Science, managment and Innovation at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He is writing his master thesis on sugarcane based polyethylene in collaboration with the Cambridge funded BRIDGE project. He started his studies at Twente University where he studied Chemical Engineering for two years, before he switched and finished his Bachelor-degree on Chemistry at the Radboud University.
