Abstract:

This study was guiding by the question “how the organic fraction of the MSW is structured in the city of São Paulo in the light of the field approach?” Thus, it sought to understand the structuring stage of organic waste management in the city of São Paulo. It was intended (a) to collect information on programs and projects in the city; (b) to map the actors and their positions in the field, (c) to identify the institutions and the current state of the organic waste management field; (d) to identify the tendency of reproduction or transformation of institutions in this field. The study employed the Strategic Action Fields’ perspective through an exploratory and qualitative study and the case study as method. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect primary data and documentary analysis was used for secondary data collection. The related actors of the organic waste management were indicated and their positions were mapped. In addition, it was possible to identify that organic waste management is an emerging field. There was also an effort to identify existing institutions in this field, as well as identify possible periods of crisis or reproduction of the field. The study contributes to the organic waste management in the city of São Paulo, indicating the current situation and the alternatives for its management.
