Infelizmente, comunidades mais carentes s\u00e3o as mais suscet\u00edveis a este quadro, uma vez que costumam apresentar um consumo de alimentos menos diversificado [1]. Uma das maiores preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es nesse quesito \u00e9 com a falta de vitamina A de crian\u00e7as e gestantes, que pode levar \u00e0 perda da vis\u00e3o e ao enfraquecimento do sistema imune, deixando o corpo mais suscet\u00edvel a outras doen\u00e7as, o que pode levar muitas vezes \u00e0 morte [2]. A\u00e7\u00f5es que promovem a suplementa\u00e7\u00e3o dessa vitamina em regi\u00f5es mais afetadas, como pa\u00edses da \u00c1frica subsaariana e do sudeste asi\u00e1tico, s\u00e3o extremamente necess\u00e1rias e salvam a vida de milhares de crian\u00e7as todos os anos [3].<\/p><p>A biotecnologia t\u00eam tamb\u00e9m formas com que pode ajudar na solu\u00e7\u00e3o desse problema: a biofortifica\u00e7\u00e3o e plantas geneticamente modificadas &#8211; tamb\u00e9m conhecidas como plantas transg\u00eanicas. A biofortifica\u00e7\u00e3o consiste no aumento de nutrientes dispon\u00edveis no consumo de determinada planta. Esse aumento pode ser feito por meio de uma s\u00e9rie de cruzamentos entre plantas, de modo a selecionar \u00e0quelas que possuem um maior valor nutritivo, ou pode ser feito por meio da engenharia gen\u00e9tica, criando uma variante transg\u00eanica. Mas o que seria uma planta transg\u00eanica?<\/p><p>Plantas transg\u00eanicas s\u00e3o plantas que receberam um gene (ou mais), vindo de outro organismo, com o objetivo de obter novas caracter\u00edsticas. O gene \u00e9 a parte do DNA que possui as instru\u00e7\u00f5es que v\u00e3o guiar o organismo a produzir certos produtos ou executar certas fun\u00e7\u00f5es, possibilitando esse processo. Um exemplo de planta transg\u00eanica biofortificada \u00e9 o arroz dourado (do ingl\u00eas \u201cGolden Rice\u201d), desenvolvida por Ingo Potrykus e Peter Beyer, que recebeu genes de outras plantas para ser capaz de produzir e acumular o betacaroteno, um precursor importante que \u00e9 convertido em vitamina A pelo organismo humano [4]. A sua aplica\u00e7\u00e3o, no entanto, ainda \u00e9 limitada, principalmente em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos transg\u00eanicos. Essa limita\u00e7\u00e3o se deve a diversos fatores: ensaios de seguran\u00e7a biol\u00f3gica e ambiental, processos regulat\u00f3rios e ades\u00e3o\/opini\u00e3o p\u00fablica. Este \u00faltimo, por vezes, passa a envolver aspectos al\u00e9m da ci\u00eancia, e podem (ou n\u00e3o), estar relacionadas ao mist\u00e9rio por tr\u00e1s do funcionamento da tecnologia de transg\u00eanicos.
