Mesmo assim, todo ano milh\u00f5es de pessoas s\u00e3o infectadas no mundo, e milhares de pacientes ainda morrem de mal\u00e1ria. Segundo a OMS, cerca de metade da popula\u00e7\u00e3o vive em \u00e1reas de risco de infec\u00e7\u00e3o pelo\u00a0<i>Plasmodium<\/i>, parasita causador da mal\u00e1ria. O\u00a0<i>Plasmodium<\/i>\u00a0\u00e9 transmitido aos humanos pela picada de f\u00eameas de mosquitos do g\u00eanero\u00a0<i>Anopheles<\/i>, e a doen\u00e7a \u00e9 causada pela multiplica\u00e7\u00e3o do parasita no sangue, dentro das hem\u00e1cias.<\/div><div>Atualmente n\u00e3o existem vacinas dispon\u00edveis contra a mal\u00e1ria, e o parasita desenvolve resist\u00eancia \u00e0s drogas de maneira r\u00e1pida. Assim, o desenvolvimento de novas alternativas de controle \u00e9 urgente, como uma vacina eficaz, novas drogas, ou medidas que diminuam a transmiss\u00e3o do parasita.<\/div><div>O Laborat\u00f3rio de Gen\u00e9tica Molecular do Departamento de Parasitologia ICB-USP usa como modelo o\u00a0<i>Plasmodium berghei<\/i>, parasita causador de mal\u00e1ria em camundongos, para: i) gerar parasitas transg\u00eanicos para identificar novos genes essenciais em diferentes est\u00e1gios do ciclo do parasita; ii) gerar novos modelos de parasitas para testar vacinas e para descobrir novas
