descobrimento de in\u00fameros fen\u00f4menos biol\u00f3gicos, al\u00e9m da elucida\u00e7\u00e3o de diversas quest\u00f5es antes pendentes quanto a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o, filogenia, biologia celular e molecular em muitos grupos de organismos. No entanto, a amostragem analisada at\u00e9 o momento \u00e9 bastante difusa, dado o foco de pesquisas anteriores em organismos de import\u00e2ncia econ\u00f4mica e, principalmente, m\u00e9dica, prejudicando as an\u00e1lises comparativas necess\u00e1rias para a determina\u00e7\u00e3o do(s) modo(s) de evolu\u00e7\u00e3o de muitas caracter\u00edsticas de interesse. Nosso objetivo \u00e9 estudar, utilizando m\u00e9todos gen\u00f4micos e transcrit\u00f4micos comparativos, a estrutura e evolu\u00e7\u00e3o de genomas de organismos unicelulares. O objeto principal de estudo s\u00e3o os parasitas da fam\u00edlia Trypanosomatidae e outros Kinetoplastida, especialmente os n\u00e3o-parasitas, e outros Euglenozoa mais distantes, com o intuito de responder v\u00e1rias quest\u00f5es b\u00e1sicas quanto \u00e0 biologia destes organismos. Algumas destas quest\u00f5es incluem: distribui\u00e7\u00e3o de introns em Euglenozoa; evolu\u00e7\u00e3o do conte\u00fado g\u00eanico e sua rela\u00e7\u00e3o com modo de vida (isto \u00e9: parasit\u00e1rio, comensal ou de vida livre); press\u00f5es seletivas nas diversas classes de genes; reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o do potencial metab\u00f3lico e sua rela\u00e7\u00e3o com caracter\u00edsticas biol\u00f3gicas; rela\u00e7\u00e3o entre o complemento g\u00eanico de hospedeiro e endossimbionte. O entendimento destes e de outros aspectos contribuir\u00e1 grandemente para o conhecimento de mecanismos b\u00e1sicos de evolu\u00e7\u00e3o de organismos e genomas em geral, e de parasitismo em particular, ajudando a entender o que faz um parasita e como melhor combat\u00ea-lo.
