The work “Effects of annealing on the luminescence characteristics of natural alexandrite,” under the guidance of Neilo Trindade of the Radiation Dosimetry and Medical Physics Group, was selected as the best Medical Physics poster at this year’s SBF Autumn Meeting (EOSBF). Student Yasmim Freire Amorim, the poster’s first author, was responsible for its presentation at the event. She is a physics major at the São Paulo Federal Institute and a FAPESP scholarship holder linked to IFUSP.
“Alexandrite is a crystal with potential for dosimetry, as it contains the two most widely used oxides as commercial dosimeters in its chemical composition. The study investigates the effect of thermal treatment on the optically stimulated luminescence of alexandrite,” commented the award-winning student.
The work also features professors Carina Ulsen (Poli-USP), Elisabeth Yoshimura, and Neilo Marcos Trindade (IFUSP) as co-authors.
“The recognition of this work is extremely gratifying. The development of new dosimeters is important for advances in medical physics, and the publication of unpublished studies like this is fundamental to the progress of science. The award reflects not only Yasmim’s effort and dedication, but also the importance of the research carried out in our group,” commented Prof. Neilo Trindade, the work’s advisor.
The Brazilian Physical Society’s Autumn Meeting (EOSBF) is an annual event that brings together leading researchers from twenty areas of research, ranging from Biological Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics to Medical Physics, among others. This year, the event was held in Florianópolis, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, from May 19 to 23.
