Pessenda (CENA/USP).

About the project: Sambaquis (shell mounds) are archaeological sites that characterize the prehistoric human occupation of almost the whole Brazilian coastal strip, which have been especially under-documented on the coast of Espírito Santo. There is a gap in our knowledge about shell mound occupations to the north of the richer states of the southeast region (São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro), where archaeological research has been more intense and where we know that the peopling of the coast started at the beginning of the Holocene. The groups that inhabited the Brazilian coast in precolonial times, known as sambaquieros or shell mound builders, were fisher-hunter-gatherers organized in small communities along the coastal strip. These groups had large poles of aggregation, where the shell mounds reach dozens of meters in height, and where the dead were buried on piles of shells, constructed over centuries through the reworking of domestic and ceremonial refuse. This project aims to fill a knowledge gap regarding the chronology and characteristics of human occupation on the north coast of Espírito Santo (municipality of Linhares), especially in terms of precolonial sites, and contribute to the development of shell mound archaeology through the excavation of sites never studied before. In the remit of the project, two shell mounds were already excavated (Lagoa Bonita 17 and Suruaca 20) that yielded occupations up to 7000 years old, contributing to what we know about the peopling of the capixaba coast, as well as an ichthyological mound (Lagoa Bonita 19) where the first human burial of the region was found. The project also contemplates DNA analysis of human remains from other shell mounds of the region, as well as the application of high-resolution geoarchaeological methods such as micromorphology, phytolith analysis and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy.

This project is a continuation of archaeological research in the Municipality of Linhares began by the Principal Investigator with the support of the FAPESP thematic project “Interdisciplinary paleoenvironmenal studies on the coast of Espírito Santo (PROJES)” (proc.

["post-896","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
