class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LBIA of the Department of Parasitology at ICB-USP was implemented in 1988 by professors Sirlei Daffre and Osvaldo Marinotti that introduced biochemical and molecular techniques for the study of different molecules of arachnids (spiders and ticks) and insects (mosquitoes and flies). These two professors shared the LBIA until the year 2000, when Dr. Osvaldo Marinotti left USP to develop studies at the University of California (USA).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial focus of Dr. Sirlei Daffre research line was the immune system of arachnids, using the cattle tick, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhipicephalus microplus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the tarantula spider, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acanthoscurria gomesiana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as models. In 2003, the research line of Dr. Sirlei incorporated the study of the interactions between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaplasma marginale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the etiologic agent of bovine anaplasmosis, and the tick <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R. microplus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2009, Dr. Andrea C. Foga\u00e7a, former student of Dr. Sirlei, returned to the LBIA and established a new line of research: the molecular interactions between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rickettsia rickettsii<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its tick vectors in Brazil, supported by a FAPESP grant. In 2010, Dr. Andrea became part of the faculty of the Department of Parasitology at ICB-USP. The collaborative studies of the two professors led to the production of important scientific articles about the interactions between ticks and tick-borne bacteria.
