Macrocycles and Inclusion compounds

Cucurbiturils, bambusurils, pyrogallolarenes, resorcinarenes, hemi-cucurbiturils, as well as their derivatives. Our focus are inclusion compounds with halogens for organic synthesis, the metallic complexes of these macrocycles for catalysis, the inclusion compounds with dyes for photodynamic therapy, illicit drugs and food components for electrochemical and optical sensors, as well as the interactions between these cavities and simple ions for the preparation of semipermeable membranes. Polymeric Membranes

Nanofiltration membranes and pervaporation membranes are extremely useful for water purification/treatment, fuel cell, gas separation and CO2 trapping among a myriad of applications. These membranes are named CUBION. We prepare too CUBION-based polymeric composites with artificial molecular channels, that are able to discriminate permeation of individual chemical species by size, by charge and/or solvophilicity.

We prepare special absorbers to treat effluents, and to get rid of oil (see film bellow), heavy metals and emerging contaminants as well.

CUBION sponges are very efficient too, and they can be shaped in several forms and sizes. As they float, they act the same way as CUBION films towards oil absorption. The oil is recovered and the CUBION componentes may be reused and recycled by simple processes.

Molecular Materials and molecular devices

In the field of molecular materials we focus naphthalene imides and diimides, as well as hypericin and azulene to prepare functional materials as thin films, MOFs, metallic complexes and all kinds of solid phases for applications in electronics, energy conversion and energy storage.

Fluorophores and Light conversion systems

Some molecular assemblies may convert light in electric current. Light serves to pump redox potentials up or down promoting oxidation or reduction reactions that would not occur without light. Especially naphthalene diimides among others are frequently photoactive.
