In 2015, Dr. Arantes was awarded with a Young Researcher Project of FAPESP (2015-2019) and, in 2016, with the select Productivity Scholarship in Chemical Engineering/Biochemical Process of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), implemented and coordinates the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Renewable Bioproducts – BBioPRO in the Department of Biotechnology at USP Lorena. Prof. Arantes has a degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering and a Doctorate’s degree in Industrial Biotechnology from the University of São Paulo. In 2007, was visiting researcher at Purdue University and the University of Maine, both in the United States. His postdoctoral (2008-2011) in enzymatic technologies for biorrefineries was held at the University of British Columbia (Canada), where he continued to work until 2014 as a collaborating researcher in the area of Biorefinery, and also as a leader of the team of enzyme technology applied to bioconversion of biomass. Currently, Dr. Arantes is vice-head of the Department of Biotechnology of EEL-USP Lorena, and serves as a reviewer for several international journals and a member of the editorial board of the international journals Bioethanol Journal, BioMed Research International Biotechnology, and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and Energy Research. Dr. Arantes has also served as a consultant to several international research funding bodies, such as the US Department of Agriculture’s Small Business Innovation Research, Kentucky Science & Engineering Foundation, Estonian Research Council, and more recently to the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission. He has also given dozens of lectures, seminars, keynote talks and plenary talks at international events in Canada, the United States, Chile, France, Spain and China, in the area of Biochemical Processes applied to the production of bioproducts and biorefineries, as well as moderating and organizer. Dr. Arantes is also currently a member of the international scientific committee for the events “Symposium on Biotechnology Applied to Lignocellulosics – Lignobiotech” (since 2014) and “I & S WORKSHOP. Insights and strategies towards a bio-based economy”. In the area of project management, between 2009 and 2012, acted as coordinator of two multi-institutional research projects involving North American institutions (University of British Columbia, Canada, University of Guelph, Canada, Washington State University, USA, Novozymes Inc., USA). Among the dozens of articles published in scientific journals and in annals of events, the article Cellulose Amorphogenesis is among the most accessed and cited of all times in the international journal Biotechnology for Biofuels. Current lines of research include the development of biochemical processes for the production of nanocelluloses, second generation biofuels, and the production of renewable chemical inputs in the concept of biorefinery.
