Transitions for sustainable mobility, the role of automotive industry and new business models

Descrição: We propose to analyze and compare Brazilian and French case studies regarding sustainable urban mobility transitions. To accomplish this goal, we analyze the diffusion level and different characteristics that explain the current development level of four niches: electro mobility, car sharing schemes, intermodal transportation, and innovation in public transportation. Using the multiple case study method, we have already compared the sustainable mobility initiatives and innovations undertaken by two German automotive companies in Brazil and in Germany (Marx, Mello, Zilbovicius & Lara, 2015). T In a similar vein, the French team analyzed what could be the reaction of the French carmakers to new uncertainties, discussing in particular the issue of industrial and environmental public policies supporting new forms of mobility and transition to more ecological products (Frigant & Jullien, 2018). The team underlined also the key role played by the first tier suppliers, but also SMEs and start-ups, in the French context (Frigant, 2016). In this regard, the two teams share a lot of things (methodology, hypothesis, general framework and some preliminary results) but also point some national particularities. The research project could be a real opportunity to cross our works in order to compare more deeply differences and similarities occurring in two different institutional contexts where firms? objectives and public objectives might be different. Indeed, in the context of discussing the role of the automotive industry to the transition to sustainable mobility, there are also several opportunities to generate new business models geared to the challenges of this field, which are seen as fundamental elements in the process of introducing innovations that lead society to more sustainable systems of urban mobility (Spickermann, Grienitz, & von der Gracht, 2013). The business model approach often associates them as facilitators in the process of introducing innovations in the market or even as units of analysis and starting points for the definition of innovation strategies (Schneider & Spieth, 2013). In addition, more recent research recognize that the essence of the concept of business models bring to some extent the essential elements for understanding, developing and, in particular, for the commercialization of innovations considered sustainable, thus introducing the logic of sustainable business models (Boons, Montalvo, Quist, & Wagner, 2013).

Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa.

Integrantes: Roberto Marx – Coordenador / Adriana Marotti de Mello – Integrante / João Valsecchi Ribeiro de Souza – Integrante / Vincent Frignant – Integrante / Mathieu Montalban – Integrante / Juliano Pelegrina – Integrante.

Financiador(es): COFECUB – Cooperação.

Número de produções C, T & A: 1 / Número de orientações: 1

2014 – Atual
