Come\u00e7ou sua vida pol\u00edtica em 1969, conquistando uma cadeira parlamentar. Posteriormente, ocupou v\u00e1rios postos durante os governos de\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usp.br\/portalatinoamericano\/espanol-manley-michael-norman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Norman Manley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a quem substituiu, em 1992, na lideran\u00e7a do Partido Popular Nacional (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/latinoamericana.wiki.br\/verbetes\/p\/ppn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PPN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) e no cargo de primeiro-ministro. Mais tarde, foi eleito duas vezes para esse mesmo cargo, adotando em suas campanhas o\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slogan\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201co poder para a ra\u00e7a majorit\u00e1ria\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patterson tornou-se manchete em 2004, quando anunciou que n\u00e3o reconheceria o governo de G\u00e9rard Latortue no\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usp.br\/portalatinoamericano\/espanol-haiti\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haiti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ap\u00f3s a ren\u00fancia de\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/latinoamericana.wiki.br\/verbetes\/a\/aristide-jean-bertrand\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jean-Bertrand\u00a0Aristide, que<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0se exilou temporariamente na\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usp.br\/portalatinoamericano\/espanol-jamaica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamaica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
