Filha de um barbeiro e de uma dona de casa, teve cinco irm\u00e3os. Come\u00e7ou a trabalhar aos quinze anos em uma loja de gravatas para ajudar nas despesas familiares. Posteriormente, foi funcion\u00e1ria de uma loja de roupas na rua do Ouvidor, no Rio de Janeiro, onde aprendeu a fazer chap\u00e9us. Pouco tempo depois, abriu seu pr\u00f3prio neg\u00f3cio e ganhou um bom dinheiro na confec\u00e7\u00e3o desse adere\u00e7o.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular pelos turbantes na cabe\u00e7a, as roupas coloridas e o jeito alegre de cantar e dan\u00e7ar, foi na\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m\u00fasica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0que teve o seu maior sucesso. O escritor Ruy Castro, autor de uma biografia de Carmen, disse que ela institucionalizou a alegria brasileira. Em 1928, conheceu o compositor Josu\u00e9 de Barros, que a levou para trabalhar na r\u00e1dio Sociedade Professor Roquete Pinto. No ano seguinte, gravou sua primeira m\u00fasica, o\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">samba\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cN\u00e3o v\u00e1 simbora\u201d, de autoria de Josu\u00e9 de Barros.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seu grande sucesso veio com a m\u00fasica \u201cPra voc\u00ea gostar de mim (Ta\u00ed)\u201d, com 35 mil c\u00f3pias vendidas. Carmen tamb\u00e9m atuou no\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usp.br\/portalatinoamericano\/es-espanol-cine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cinema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0e no\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usp.br\/portalatinoamericano\/es\/es-espanol-teatro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teatro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0nos anos 30. Entre seus filmes destacam-se\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Al\u00f4 Al\u00f4 Brasil\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ao lado de sua irm\u00e3 Aurora, companheira em outros trabalhos, e\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estudantes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Em 1936, estreou na r\u00e1dio Tupi, tornando-se a cantora de r\u00e1dio de maior sal\u00e1rio do Brasil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Em 1939, usou pela primeira vez o traje de baiana no filme\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banana da Terra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cantando a m\u00fasica de\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usp.br\/portalatinoamericano\/espanol-caymmi-dorival\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dorival Caymmi\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chamada \u201cO que \u00e9 que a baiana tem\u201d. Essa imagem serviu como s\u00edmbolo de um Brasil tropical. Nesse ano, acompanhada pelo conjunto Bando da Lua, foi para os Estados Unidos. Seu sotaque e sua pron\u00fancia errada da l\u00edngua inglesa conquistaram os norte-americanos. Cantava em programas sucessos como \u201cMam\u00e3e eu quero\u201d, \u201cTico-tico no fub\u00e1\u201d, tornando-se a segunda estrela mais bem paga de Hollywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nos anos 40, veio ao Brasil e ficou decepcionada com os coment\u00e1rios de que estava americanizada. Em 1947, casou-se com David Alfred Sebastian, que conheceu durante as filmagens do filme\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copacabana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nessa \u00e9poca fazia muitos shows nos Estados Unidos e em outros pa\u00edses. Carmen sofreu de depress\u00e3o, teve problemas conjugais, e vivia uma rotina estafante para dar conta dos in\u00fameros compromissos profissionais.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faleceu em 1955, v\u00edtima de um ataque card\u00edaco.
