History of the Graduate Program in Functional and Molecular Biology at the ICB – University of São Paulo

Founded in 2024, the Graduate Program in Functional and Molecular Biology at the Biomedical Sciences institute (ICB) of the University of São Paulo (USP) is the result of an innovative and unprecedented merger in Brazilian graduate education, combining two programs recognized as excellent by CAPES (score 6): the Graduate Programs in Human Physiology and Pharmacology at the ICB. Despite its youth, the program already stands out for its excellence and innovation, establishing itself as a reference in research and in the education of high-level scientists. Born from the bold vision of its faculty advisors, the Graduate Program has remained at the forefront of biological and molecular studies, constantly adapting to scientific and technological advances. The Graduate Program in Functional and Molecular Biology (PPG-BFM) is organized into five research areas:

1-Neuroscience and Behavior

2-Molecular and Cellular Signaling

3-Metabolism

4-Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of Organs and Systems

5-Inflammation and Cancer

Program Mission

The program’s mission is to prepare highly qualified professionals who are ready to drive scientific progress in a meaningful way. We value a truly multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond occasional collaborations, integrating diverse fields of knowledge. Our students are encouraged to develop critical and innovative thinking, always guided by ethics and good scientific practices, to face contemporary challenges and contribute to the well-being of society.

Our Core Pillars

-Academic excellence: We offer a solid and comprehensive formation to prepare scientists for academic and research careers.

-Innovation: We stimulate creativity in projects that seek solutions to complex problems.

-Collaboration: We promote global partnerships across different fields of knowledge.

-Social Responsibility: We use science as a tool for sustainable development and human well-being.
