He began his activities as Professor Doctor in the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and Mechanical Systems at the Polytechnic School of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (EPUSP) in 1998. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2003 and Full Professor in 2005. He is currently a CNPq Level 1A Researcher. He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from EPUSP in 1990 and 1993, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from ”The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor”, USA, in 1998. During his doctoral studies, he received two awards: ”Distinguished Achievement Award” and ”Ivor K. McIvor Award”. The first award is granted in recognition of personal and academic excellence, and the second in recognition of research performance.<\/p>\n
He is Deputy Scientific Director of the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (RCGI-USP). He is a specialist in Computational Mechanics, mainly in the application of topology optimization methods and finite elements to multiphysics systems such as smart materials and structures (piezoelectric sensors and actuators, piezocomposite materials including functionally graded materials (FGMs)), energy harvesting devices, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and fluid flow-based devices (mainly turbomachinery). He has published articles in international journals with selective editorial policies and book chapters, and has delivered lectures at foreign and national universities and companies. Citations of his published articles have resulted in an ISI Web of Science H-index of 38. He has served as a reviewer for national and international journals and conferences and as an ad hoc consultant for Brazilian funding agencies such as FAPESP, CNPq and CAPES, and international agencies such as ERC (Europe), DFG (Germany), NWO (The Netherlands), ISF (Israel), NRF (South Africa), and NSF (USA). He participated as a panelist on the ”Panel of Experts for Proposals” in the ”Mechanics of Materials (MoM-X) 2010” of the NSF programme, USA, and was a voting member of the ”Frontier Ideas meeting panel” to decide potential topics for the announcement of the ”Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI-2011)”, USA. Over the last ten years, he organized or co-organized Mini-Symposia (MS) at the international conferences WCCM from 2012 to 2026, USNCCM from 2013 to 2025, IFAC 2022, ENGOPT 2014, TopWebinar 2021, FGM 2022, and at the Ibero-Latin American Congresses CILAMCE from 2015 to 2024.<\/p>\n
Professor Emilio Silva was a ”Plenary Speaker” at the international conferences MMFGM 2006, WCSMO 2013, and 3rd EMI 2017, at the Ibero-Latin American conferences CILAMCE 2006, VIII CIMM 2017, CILAMCE 2022, and at the national conferences ”USP conferences on Engineering 2012” and MecSol 2013. He was also a ”Semi-Plenary Speaker” at the international conferences WCCM 2012 and 2022. He was the Chair of the MMFGM2014 Congress held in Atibaia, S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, in October 2014. He is a member of the ”Editorial board” of the journals ”Mechanics Research Communications”, ”International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics”, ”International Journal of Computational Engineering Science and Mechanics”, and ”Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering”, serves as ”review editor” for the journal ”Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization”, and was Editor-in-Chief of the journal ”Polytechnica”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
