They are typically organized by the type of project that produces the emission reductions or removals, such as forest restoration, renewable energy, waste management, agriculture, and improvements in industrial processes. In general, each credit corresponds to 1 tCO₂e — one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent.

In forest projects, credits may come from the restoration of degraded areas, tree planting, or the protection of areas that store carbon. In energy projects, they usually arise from replacing more polluting sources with cleaner alternatives, such as solar, wind, hydrogen, or biogas. In waste management and agriculture, methane capture is common — methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere if left untreated.

This classification by project type is important because each category follows its own measurement logic. In a forest project, for example, it is necessary to monitor how long the carbon remains stored; in an energy project, the focus is on comparing the energy generated with the source that would have been used without the project. In other words, the project type helps define how the credit will be calculated, monitored, and verified.

For those just getting started, the key message is simple: two credits may have the same unit value, but very different origins, risks, and impacts. That is why understanding the project type is one of the first steps toward reading the carbon market more clearly.

In the carbon market, credits are not all generated in the same way.
