Cleaning with the light!

Chemical industries and effluent treatment plants (ETP) use various techniques to remove water pollution. Some of these techniques have been known and used for millennia for water purification – such as filtration with sand and clay, separation of solids through fine cloths, and boiling. In antiquity, of course, the notion of “pure” water was very different from what we have today, as well as the materials that pollute our rivers, lakes and dams.

Nowadays, a ETP makes use of several technologies, ranging from simple physical phenomena such as decantation (separation of two materials by their weight difference) to complex biochemical processes, using specialized yeasts, bacteria and algae.

In our laboratory, we will present some processes that we have developed using ultraviolet light and sunlight to remove antibiotics, pesticides and other contaminants of high environmental risk. We will explain a little of the fundamentals of the techniques and show equipment developed for these applications.
