History

Created in 1982 by Prof. Doctor Cláudio Augusto Oller do Nascimento, initially as the Simulations and Process Control Laboratory (LSCP), the Chemical Systems Engineering Center of the Chemical Engineering Department of the Polytechnic School of USP (CESQ/PQI-EPUSP) has been dedicated to modeling, simulations, optimization, and control of chemical processes. The CESQ/PQI-EPUSP is characterized by the diversification and permanent updating of its lines of research.

The research in Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) at CESQ/PQI-EPUSP began about fifteen years ago, initially with the project coordinated by Prof. Doctor Roberto Guardani, entitled “Study of Photochemical Processes for the Degradation of Organic Industrial Effluents” (FAPESP Project 98/12888-4) and then with the Thematic Project coordinated by Prof. Nascimento, entitled “Chemical System Engineering” (FAPESP Project 01/06657-4). At the time, the intense collaboration with the research group led by Prof. André Braun (University of Karlsruhe, Germany), Prof. Frank H. Quina (IQ-USP) and Prof. Osvaldo Chiavone Filho (UFRN). The environmental issue has always been relevant among the research topics at CESQ/PQI-EPUSP, as indicated by the creation, in 2006, of CEPEMA (Center for Training and Research in the Environment) by Prof. Nascimento, in Cubatão (SP). The consolidation of AOP research in the following years took place through projects coordinated by Prof. Doctor Antonio Carlos Silva Costa Teixeira, “Engineering of Advanced Photochemical Oxidation Processes Applied to Effluent Treatment” (FAPESP 06/52751-6) and “Development of Hybrid Solar Processes for the Treatment of Industrial Effluents” (CNPq 475904/2006-0 Universal) and projects led by Prof. Nascimento, including “National Institute of Environmental Studies-INCT CEPEMA-USP” (FAPESP 2008/57708-7 and CNPq 703905/2009) and “CEPEMA-Cooperative Center in Environmental Engineering” (FAPESP Thematic Project 2013/50218-2).

In this context, the CESQ/PQI-EPUSP AdOx Group has been diversifying its activities and advancing research in AOP, maintaining recent cooperation with national and international institutions, including: Textile and Paper Engineering Department, Polytechnic University of Valencia (Prof. Antonio Arques, Espanha); Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Department, University of Colorado (Prof. Fernando Rosario Ortiz, EUA); Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California (Prof. William Cooper, EUA); Department of Chemical Engineering and Physical Chemistry, University of Extremadura (Prof. Fernando Beltrán, Espanha); Laboratory of Environmental Biological Test, Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research (Profa. Sueli I. Borrely, Brasil); International Reference Center for Water Reuse, Department of Environmental Engineering at EPUSP (Prof. José Carlos Mierzwa, Brasil); University of Engineering and Technology (Profa. Patricia A. Pantoja, Peru); Federal University of ABC (Prof. Sergio Brochsztain); Department of Dental Materials, Faculty of Dentistry at USP Prof. Paulo E. Capel Cardoso).
