ABOUT LigninLab

The LigninLab started in 2014 when Igor Cesarino joined the Department of Botany at the University of São Paulo as first-level Professor. The major goal of the LigninLab is to understand the molecular basis of all aspects of lignin metabolism in plants, including transcriptional regulation, biosynthesis and polymerization. The laboratory is located in the "André Dreyfus" Building from the Institute of Biosciences at the University of São Paulo (Campus Armando Salles de Oliveira, São Paulo). Founded back in 1934, the Department of Botany is committed to the mission of excellence in innovative research and to providing a superior education in many aspects of plant biology and related life sciences. The Department maintains an excellent infrastructure, including laboratories, an external experimental area with greenhouses and gardens for didactic and experimental use, the Herbarium SPF that holds up to 300,000 samples of algae and vascular plants and the Xylotheque “Nanuza Luiza de Menezes” with thousands of wood samples.

OUR RESEARCH

Our group aim to understand all aspects of lignin metabolism in plants, focusing on C4 grasses, and use this knowledge in the genetic engineering of bioenergetic cultures to produce raw materials optimized for the biorefinery.
