São Paulo City Hall (PMSP) estimates that it collects up to 50,000 tons of pruning waste every year. Bertioga, a coastal city in the state of São Paulo, estimates that it generates more than 2,000 tons a year. These figures show that the amount of this type of waste is significant, so the reuse of pruning waste has been studied globally by various teaching and research institutions such as the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) and the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (FAUUSP), which have come together to think of ways to add value to pruning waste from urban tree planting in Brazilian cities in practice.

de Sousa, C.S.M. (2018). Design and Waste Upcycling from Tree Pruning and Fallen Trees at the USP Campus (University of São Paulo)—Potentialities. In: Leal Filho, W., Frankenberger, F., Iglecias, P., Mülfarth, R. (eds) Towards Green Campus Operations. World Sustainability Series. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-76885-4_51

One of the remarkable characteristics of the USP campuses is the abundance of trees. Their regular cleaning and pruning generate a lot of waste, and its management is done by the University Mayor. These activities are getting more complex because of the summer heavy rains and the consequent increase of fallen trees. On the other hand, a significant part of this waste could, eventually, be benefitted and employed in artifacts production, that could be used on-campus, or as input for research and extension design activities. The results of an exploratory research are presented here, aimed at identifying: through bibliographic research, the theoretical fundamentals for sustainable design and wood waste upcycling and the history of USP Campus afforestation; through institutional documents consulting and interviews with the responsible personnel, the main characteristics of the existing trees species, the guidelines for their use, the current monitoring activities and required conditions for this wood harnessing; and through the university database access, finished researches devoted to this waste exploitation in artifacts production. Some municipal experiences on this waste management in Brazil were also analyzed, in order to complete the argumentation for the proposal of an experimental design research project in partnership with the University Mayor.

Scientific articles

The article presents an investigation into the development of composite materials using various plant fibers, mostly residual, combined with castor oil-based polyurethane resin, aiming to valorize waste as raw material, reintegrating it into the production cycle as an alternative to traditional composite materials, which have negative effects on human health and the environment. Sheets of the material were produced, subsequently subjected to subtractive manufacturing processes, in different variations targeting different applications. The results demonstrate the feasibility of creating prototypes of products using these composites, as well as highlighting potential future improvements in processes and material.

This article aims to analyze the use of digital manufacturing technologies in product design and the insertion of wood from tree waste as raw material, combined with other materials, in urban furniture design processes. The methods used in the research are: a) systematic literature review (RSL) and; b) analysis of similar ones, developed on a national scale. The results indicate that the analyzed projects that include the user in ideation stages, as well as gather data from the context of inserting the object and combine materials in their elaboration, also considering their physical characteristics, obtain better performance in meeting the needs of the public, the acceptance of the object by the community and the longevity of the furniture in an urban environment.

Urban forestry is fundamental to cities’ quality of life and resilience and deserves an effort in planning, management and expansion. This article aims to analyse and systematise technological routes to indicate potential uses of urban tree residues, focusing on the research, teaching and extension activities of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The methodological procedures consist of: 1) review of related literature; 2) identification and classification of species; 3) analysis of tree management procedures; 4) implementation of experimental projective and productive processes and; 5) conducting capacity building and technology transfer workshops. The results present a mapping of the technological routes indicating a transition to a more sustainable production model for this urban natural capital.

The waste management of urban greenery is directly related to the sustainability of cities. Architects, designers, managers, and entrepreneurs have used woody residues creatively, in innovative business models, focusing on the transition to a circular economy. This article presents a systemic analysis of experiences on the theme, with an emphasis on the use of woody residues, from the design perspective, taking the State of São Paulo, Brazil, as the locus of investigation. The research covers: consolidation of the theoretical knowledge, bibliographic review on guidelines, best practices and production flow models, and the diagnosis of four local initiatives. The results demonstrate the relevant role of design as an inducer of new business models, as well as the importance of universities, in knowledge dissemination, technology transfer, and new initiatives proposals, with multiplier effects.

The aim of the research was to create an identification key for 22 species of trees that frequently occur in the city of São Paulo, as well as photographic plates and descriptions for each species included in the key. The broader aim of this work is to help in the identification and then reuse of pruned branches in the city of São Paulo, so that it aims to become a useful and accessible tool for consultation.

As cities grow, urban afforestation becomes more important both for aesthetics and environmental reasons. Nevertheless, pruning and removal of fallen trees, demand a waste management system, not easy to deal with, especially in big tropical cities, such as São Paulo, in Brazil. On the other hand, part of this waste could be employed in wooden artefacts production, reducing the pressure on the forests, in a circular economy and systemic design approach – the main hypothesis of ongoing research at the University of São Paulo. This paper presents the existing problem, the theoretical foundations upon which the study was built, the findings of an international scientific literature review that looked for successful experiences and how the design was involved; and suggests further researches.
