An internationally recognized architect and landscape designer, Roberto Burle Marx spent a period in Germany, where he came into contact with European artistic avant-gardes and studied at the National School of Fine Arts. While combining his work as an architect with drawing and painting, it was as a landscape designer that he stood out and gained international fame. With his gardens resembling abstract art pieces, he revolutionized the tradition of Brazilian landscaping. Among his most well-known works are the garden terrace of the Gustavo Capanema building, the Burle Marx gardens, and the Flamengo Park, all in Rio de Janeiro.
