History
The academic activities of the Graduate Program in Education (PPGEdu) of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Ribeirão Preto at the University of São Paulo (FFCLRP/USP) began in 2011, when the first selection process for admission to the Master’s Course took place. In the first four-year period of activities (2013-2016), the CAPES Evaluation Committee gave the Program a score of 4, an assessment reiterated by CTC/CAPES. The growth demonstrated by PPGEdu during this period was fundamental for the development of actions in 2017 and 2018 with a view to constructing the Extension Project for the Doctorate Course, approved in December 2018 by CAPES, after also being approved and endorsed by USP. In the first half of 2019, the first selection process for the doctorate was opened, which began in September of that year. Since its foundation, PPGEdu has assumed the purpose of training professionals and researchers in the field of school and non-school education, as well as teachers for basic and higher education, a goal that was reiterated for the Doctoral Course. By the end of 2024, 220 master’s and 18 doctoral degrees had been awarded; in that year, 36 master’s and 79 doctoral students were enrolled in postgraduate studies. The PPGEdu Curricular Structure is organized into two Lines of Research: Line 1 – Philosophical, Scientific and Cultural Foundations of Education, in which studies are developed on the sciences that constitute the theoretical bases of education, and Line 2 – Public Policies and Organization of Educational Work, in which studies are developed related to educational policies and school practices. All faculty members are members of and/or coordinate study and research groups, as well as laboratories dedicated to examining themes in the broad area of Human Sciences, particularly in the areas of Education, Sociology and Philosophy, in addition to maintaining national and international ties with multidisciplinary research collectives and partnerships with state, federal and community public universities. In this way, the Program seeks to contribute to the construction of a virtuous circle dedicated to the training of new generations of researchers. PPGEdu is funded by CAPES/PROAP and has Social Demand scholarships.
The Program’s mission is to train professionals and researchers in the field of school and non-school education, as well as teachers for basic and higher education. Based on these guidelines, it aims to: a) qualify professionals for research, teaching and work in contexts, institutions, organizations and associations in the area of education; b) promote the production of knowledge in the comprehensive and plural field of education through excellent research; c) disseminate, on a national and international scale, the knowledge produced within the scope of PPGEdu; and d) base the training on democratic and inclusive principles and through practices of participation of the academic community in internal processes of communication and deliberation of objectives.
