With the presentation of her work at two important events, historian Drielli Peyerl gives visibility to the RCGI and is elected to the board of the Petroleum History Institute
The FAPESP Shell Research Centre for Gas Innovation (RCGI) was present at two recent events related to petroleum and natural gas in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the U.S. The RCGI was represented by researcher Drielli Peyerl at the 2018 History of Oil Symposium and at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). The events took place from May 17 to 23, where Ms. Peyerl made two presentations of RCGI projects.
“At the symposium, I presented Brazil and the problem of the domestic supply of fossil fuels, co-authored by Professors Edmilson Moutinho dos Santos, Dominique Mouette, and Evandro Mateus Moretto, all from the University of São Paulo (USP), and Professor Silvia Figueirôa, from the University of Campinas (Unicamp). The good news is that we were invited to publish a full article in the Oil-Industry History journal of the next semester,” she reports. She is a post-Doctoral student at the Energy and Environment Institute of the University of São Paulo (IEE/USP). The article is related mainly to the RCGI’s Project 25.
At the following congress, Ms. Peyerl presented the initial data regarding the development of a model applied to evaluating the environmental impact of carbon capture and storage (CCS) activities, which is Project 42 of the RCGI. Coauthored with Evandro Mateus Moretto, Edmilson Moutinho dos Santos, Dominique Mouette, Hirdan Katarina de Medeiros Costa, Márcia Konrad (all from USP), as well as Sérgio Pulice, the work is entitled Environmental Impact Assessment of Carbon Capture and Storage: Social Perspectives and Environmental Restrictions for Natural Gas in Brazil.
“During this presentation, many people were interested and asked questions regarding issues involving the public perception of CCS in Brazil, which is the subject we are delving into, and we even formed an interdisciplinary group, about two months ago,” Ms. Peyerl pointed out.
As one of the biggest events in the area of petroleum and natural gas in the United States, the AAPG has attracted an average of 6,900 attendees from 78 countries, over the last five years. The researcher opened the first session with a presentation on geophysics and petroleum in Brazil. “I was thrilled to be invited by the renowned American geologist, Matt Silverman, to be his co-chair for the first session: History of Petroleum Geology.”
During the trip, Ms. Peyerl was also nominated and elected as a new member of the board of the Petroleum History Institute of the United States.
