Laboratório de Farmacogenômica

Alice Cristina Rodrigues

Lab head and Principal Investigator

Biography

I was trained as a molecular biologist. I have a longstanding interest in the molecular mechanisms that affect the response of drugs used in the therapy of metabolic diseases. In particular, I studied during my PhD the pharmacogenomics of statins response and  was trained in large-scale genotyping platforms during a short-term visit at Centro Nacional de Genotipado (CEGEN), Santiago de Compostela, Spain. During my postdoc, I started working on microRNAs as master regulators of drug metabolism in the laboratory of Dr. Aiming Yu at SUNY, Buffalo, NY, as a visiting scholar. As soon as I returned to Brazil, I began a new field of research at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and received my first grant as a young investigator. The research aimed to discover microRNAs in diabetes and as targets of anti-hyperglycemic drugs. From 2013 to 2021 I was an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) and since 2021 I have been promoted to associate professor. My laboratory is currently focused on discovering novel microRNAs in obesity and obesity-related disorders such as non-alcoholic steatosis that can be used in therapy and/or diagnosis. We are applying a variety of molecular and cellular approaches to study the effect of microRNAs in vivo. We have been using exosomes or muscle electroporation to deliver microRNAs. As a principal investigator of a research laboratory and a faculty at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, I am actively involved in collaborations.
