History

The Graduate Studies Program in Biotechnology was created in 1991at the Master level, with the participation of 4 Units of the São Paulo University (USP), theTechnological Research Institute of the State of São Paulo (IPT), and the Butantan Institute of the Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo (IBu). The official approval by the USP was published in13/04/1991.
At that time, 26 advisors were accreditated, 55 disciplines were offered, and the Program admitted 14 students.
The first national evaluation of the Program by CAPES took place during the 1992-1993 biennium, in the New Course (CN) category.
In 1998, the Program asked for extension to the Doctorate level at the University of São Paulo. Upon approval in 3/10/98, the 6 first doctorate students of the Program were admitted in1999.
In 2001, during the 1998-2000 CAPES evaluation of the Brazilian graduate studies programs, the Master Course ranged 5, allowing the proposal of the Doctorate Course of the Program. This proposal was approved by CAPES in 18/03/2002.
In 2016, to commemorate 25 years of existence of the Program, that produced 497 Master Degrees, 294 PhDs, and 266 patent deposits, a special workshop was organized at the Butantan Institute.
