General Information

COURSEWORK: Masters’ students must take 96 credit units to be eligible for the title, among which 24 are credits from classes and 72 are research credits attributed to individual research activities and thesis writing. At least 50% of the minimum number of credits from classes required for the Masters’ degree must encompass courses offered by the Entomology Graduate Program.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Students must demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants must demonstrate minimum reading ability in a written exam taken during the same period as the general entomology exam. Alternatively, applicants may demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting a copy of a certificate of English proficiency issued by an internationally recognized test (e.g., TOEFL). Certificates are accepted and the minimum score required in those tests will be announced in the Graduate Program webpage.

QUALIFYING EXAMINATION: Not required from Masters’ students.

ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC REPORTS: After 15 months from enrollment, following two standard deadlines: May 15th and October 15th. Activity reports must follow the template provided.

General Information

COURSEWORK: Doctoral students must take 168 credit units to be eligible for the title, among which 20 are credits from classes and 148 are research credits attributed to individual research activities and dissertation writing. At least 50% of the minimum course credits required for the discipline for the Doctorate degree must encompass courses offered by the Entomology Graduate Program.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: All Brazilian and foreign students must pass the English exam demonstrating their proficiency exam in both speaking and understanding. This proficiency exam will be offered twice a year on dates announced following the procedures listed in the rules of the Graduate Program. Doctoral students must pass the English proficiency exam earlier than 24 months from the enrollment date.

QUALIFYING EXAM: Qualifying exam will be required to all Doctoral students. Candidates will be evaluated considering their scientific maturity and independence, and general knowledge in the field. The Qualifying Exam will follow Article VII.2 of the Graduate Program rules. Students must take this exam no longer than 24 months from enrollment and have completed at least 16 credits from their class coursework.

ADDITIONAL EVALUATION: Before the the Doctoral Dissertation is presented, all candidates must show proof of a published article in the field of Entomology. The published article of authorship or co-authorship of the candidate must have been submitted four years prior to this evaluation or later. Alternatively, candidates may present proof that a manuscript is accepted for publication in a journal with editorial staff, peer review process, and indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and/or SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SCImago) and/or Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO).

SCIENTIFIC REPORTS: Reports are due to every doctoral student, which must be completed and presented up to 15, 27, and 39 months from enrollment, observing the following deadlines: May 15th and October 15th. The activity report must follow the template provided.

COURSEWORK: Doctoral students must take 192 credit units to be eligible for the title, among which 44 are credits from classes and 148 are credits are research credits attributed to individual research activities and dissertation writing. At least 50% of the minimum course credits required for the discipline for the Doctorate degree must encompass courses offered by the Entomology Graduate Program.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE APPLICATION TO THE SELECTION PROCESS: The application will be analyzed by the CCP if the candidate has completed: (1) Undergraduate research scientific initiation (demonstrated by a ‘Scientific Initiation Grant’ awarded by a governmental research funding agency or by a nongovernmental entity associated to the University) for at least 24 months; (2) has submitted at least three manuscripts to national or international scientific events or has published, as the main author, at least one scientific article in journals indexed, specialized editorial body. If the application is approved by the CCP, the admission to the Direct Doctorate will be given through the same criteria for admission to the Doctorate with a Masters’ degree.
