HISTORY

A brief history of LBIA

The LBIA of the Department of Parasitology at ICB-USP was implemented in 1988 by professors Sirlei Daffre and Osvaldo Marinotti that introduced biochemical and molecular techniques for the study of different molecules of arachnids (spiders and ticks) and insects (mosquitoes and flies). These two professors shared the LBIA until the year 2000, when Dr. Osvaldo Marinotti left USP to develop studies at the University of California (USA).

The initial focus of Dr. Sirlei Daffre research line was the immune system of arachnids, using the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, and the tarantula spider, Acanthoscurria gomesiana, as models. In 2003, the research line of Dr. Sirlei incorporated the study of the interactions between Anaplasma marginale, the etiologic agent of bovine anaplasmosis, and the tick R. microplus.

In 2009, Dr. Andrea C. Fogaça, former student of Dr. Sirlei, returned to the LBIA and established a new line of research: the molecular interactions between Rickettsia rickettsii and its tick vectors in Brazil, supported by a FAPESP grant. In 2010, Dr. Andrea became part of the faculty of the Department of Parasitology at ICB-USP. The collaborative studies of the two professors led to the production of important scientific articles about the interactions between ticks and tick-borne bacteria. The LBIA is currently coordinated by Prof. Andrea Fogaça.
