Abstract: It investigates the multilateral interactions between the immune system and various physiological systems in severe cases of infection (sepsis) and systemic inflammation. With this approach, it seeks to identify the mechanisms through which these systems cooperate or compete with each other in different contexts. Many, but not all, of these mechanisms involve the central nervous system as an integrator of immune, physiological, and environmental signals.
