The Dante Moreira Leite Library of the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo (IPUSP) is a reference center whose mission is to coordinate actions for the selection, meeting, organization and dissemination of information in Psychology in Brazil and Latin America, in the area of support to teaching, research, extension and professional practices, contributing to the generation, preservation and visibility of knowledge in the area.

Its creation has its origin in the collections of the libraries belonging to the subjects of Psychology and Educational Psychology then existing at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of São Paulo, one of the institutions that were the training base for the creation of USP. In 1970, these libraries were transferred to the new facilities of the Instituto de Psicologia na Cidade Universitária (Campus of the Capital) and integrated into a single set, giving rise to the IPUSP’s Library and Documentation Service, whose activities began in January 1972. In 1985, the Library had its facilities refurbished and expanded and in 1995 it started to have its own building, occupying an area of 2,170 m².

In 2000, the Virtual Health Library – Psicologia Brasil (VHL-Psi Brazil) started to coordinate projects that resulted in the meeting, organization and dissemination of psychological knowledge generated in the country. In 2003, the VHL-Psi model is expanded to the other Latin American countries and the Library begins to coordinate projects for the construction of Virtual Libraries of Psychology in several countries of the region, aiming at the integration of the Latin American psychologist around the technical-scientific information.

Over the years, the Library has expanded its role in relation to the development of information and communication technologies and the new needs of its users. Today, in addition to keeping one of the most complete collections in Latin America in the area of Psychology, it assumes a fundamental role in the formation of the informational competence of the students of IPUSP, ministering subjects, courses, providing personalized service; in the generation of knowledge, with the publication of scientific articles, books, book chapters and works of events by its team; in the actions related to the preservation of the institutional memory of IPUSP, through the joint work with the Memory Center of IPUSP and Museum of Psychology of IPUSP.

The trajectory of the Dante Moreira Leite Library, analogous to other information centers, shows that the emphasis on information management has shifted from the collection to the access. In this path, many changes, advances and transformations have taken place, but its history and future perspectives continue to point to its major goal: to be a protagonist in the formation of professionals and researchers committed to science and social causes in the country.
