RCGI showcases low-carbon technologies in CNN and SBT reports

The Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI), based at the University of São Paulo (USP), was featured in two major Brazilian television programs this past weekend. The technologies developed by the centre were presented on CNN Sustentabilidade, aired on Saturday, April 5, and Pé na Estrada, broadcast by SBT on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The reports highlighted initiatives led by RCGI in partnership with the private sector, focusing on the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One of the key innovations featured was the production and refueling of hydrogen from ethanol — a promising alternative for the future of sustainable mobility.

For the CNN report, the team visited the RCGI in the weeks prior to filming interviews and footage in the Fuel Cell Laboratory and the Pilot Plant for Hydrogen Refueling from Ethanol. During the program, RCGI’s Scientific Director, Professor Julio Meneghini, explained how the technology works and its potential environmental and economic impacts. Professor Marcos Buckeridge, Director of RCGI’s Bioenergy, Carbon Capture and Storage (BE)CCS program, also participated live, presenting the originality and progress of the center’s innovations.

RCGI’s appearance on SBT’s Pé na Estrada included insights from Alexandre Breda, Shell Brasil’s Low-Carbon Technology Manager — one of RCGI’s partners — and from Professor Julio Meneghini. The program was also recorded in advance at RCGI’s facilities, emphasizing the role of collaboration between academia and industry in advancing sustainable energy solutions.
