The National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCT) program has broad, far-reaching, nation-wide goals, such as:
– The possibility of gathering and mobilizing the country’s best research teams, specially those focused on sustainable development or cutting-edge science;
– Propel internationally competitive basic scientific research;
– Stimulate the development of cutting-edge applied science and technology research in order to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, in close conjunction with startups and companies associated with the Brazilian System of Technology (Sibratech).
Besides fostering the advance of Brazil’s capacities in diverse areas knowledge through the creation of attractive, stimulating environments for talented students of all levels and ages, the program is also directly responsible for the schooling of young researchers, supporting the implementation and operation of laboratories in universities and companies, allowing a better nation-wide distribution of scientific and technological research and increasing the country’s knowledge in top-priority areas for its development.
The INCTs should also implement programs that contribute to science education and the dissemination of science among common citizens.
The creation of the institutes was possible with the collaboration of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Research Support Foundations of Amazonas (Fapeam), Pará (Fapespa), São Paulo (Fapesp), Minas Gerais (Fapemig), Rio de Janeiro (Faperj) and Santa Catarina (Fapesc), as well as the Ministry of Health and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).

INCT of Environmental Studies
The National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) of Environmental Studies is structured in nine research fields: mass spectrometry, remediation of contaminated areas, biodegradation of aromatic compounds by microorganisms, monitoring air, photochemical processes, organic synthesis by clean chemical, water reuse, environmental education.
This way, the INCT research initiatives are involving the simulation and optimization of processes of interest to the chemical industry, water reuse, new catalysts for advanced oxidation processes, control of atmospheric and environmental pollutants, environmental education to elementary and middle levels, specialization courses for professionals (Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Management).

INCT of Irrigation Engineering
The INI (National Institute of Irrigation) was created to contribute to the improvement of the irrigation sector in Brazil, encourage applied researches, accelerate the diffusion of technology to small-scale farmers and provide high quality services to businesses and customers who want to assess their systems and products.
The INI is intended to be a reference center of excellence, with national and international coverage, for all those who seek the rational use of water and energy resources available in the means of agricultural production.

INCT in Semiochemicals in Agriculture
The National Institute of Science and Technology in Agriculture Semiochemicals has the challenge to reduce the use of agrochemicals, preserving the environment for sustainable agriculture.
The topic to be researched is multidisciplinary, comprising studies of chemical volatiles from insects and plants, artificial creation and study of biology and behavior of insects and integration with other methods of agricultural pests controlling.
The group’s goal is to reduce dependence on foreign developing technological foundation for the identification, synthesis and use of semiochemicals (insects and plants) in Brazilian agriculture.

The main objective of the Institute is the study of democracy from the perspective of the Brazilian Democratic State Law, understood as universal access to law protection and human rights guarantees, free from violence, especially that resulting from the actions of State agents and organized crime, that are serious threats to public security and democratic governance.

INCT of Integrated Analysis of Environmental Risk
Brazil’s economic growth has greatly increased the areas potentially impacted by pollution produced by agriculture, industries, forest fires, vehicular emissions and electricity generation. Considering such situation, the Brazilian Government moves towards the implementation of biofuels as part of its strategy of energy self-sufficiency.
The INCT of Analysis Integrated of Environmental Risk analyzes the variety of expertise to cover the main aspects of Brazil’s energy transition: the comparative risk represented by different types of biofuels and the new risks exposed by the expansion of the frontiers of pollution for deprived areas of technological sufficiency.

INCT for Research in Immunology
The Institute for Research in Immunology (iii) proposes to Raise the Brazilian Medical Immunology to a level of international excellence.
The Institute studies issues of medical, social and economic interest for the country, and have complementary technical-scientific approach, through genomic, pathophysiological and pharmacological studies, such as allergy, transplant, cancer, infection, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency.
There networking for the production of scientific knowledge aiming to translate the knowledge generated in basic research to clinical application. Ally with the translation research, the Institute also shares different knowledge of the members of this network to the students, tecnicals and researchers training and education within our Institute.

INCT of Developmental Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents
The Institute is dedicated to research and production of knowledge in the mental health of children and adolescents from the framework of the development of psychiatry.
Among the main objectives are: conduct studies in the area of psychiatry development, seeking new research methods and technologies for the prevention of mental disorders in primary and secondary level of care; create new technologies for training of health professionals and teachers of elementary and secondary education for the diagnosis and early intervention of mental disorders; create new centers of generation of knowledge and centers of excellence in the field of Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents in Brazil; develop electronic medical records for psychiatric evaluation with potential to be absorbed by the public education.

INCT of Stem Cells and Cell Therapy
Cell therapy means use of cells for therapeutic purposes. Successful cell therapies with stem cells have emerged in recent years and the demand for new therapies has brought hope for the treatment of various diseases. The development of cell therapies begins with basic research to understand the mechanisms involved in maintaining the undifferentiated state of stem cells.
The National Institute of Science and Technology in Cell Therapy aims to develop a program of basic and clinical research in this area. The proposed work plan for the Institute possess three main components: the program of scientific research, educational activities in the broad sense and the program of knowledge transfer and innovation to public or private entities.

INCT of Astrophysics
The objective of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Astrophysics has strategic character; Your mission is to insert the Brazilian astronomy in the future of world astronomy. The Institute brings together 144 PhD scientists from 27 emerging and established institutions that form a network to plan and implement actions with a view to the future of Brazilian astronomy. The institute has five strategic objectives: maximizing the return on investment in Gemini and SOAR telescopes; repair the Brazilian astronomical community to the era of LSST telescope; establish an operational Brazilian network of virtual observatories in the next three years; develop projects in radio astronomy, optical astronomy and scientific satellites / IR; organize a course distance of astronomy for science teachers and implement a Portal of Astronomy in Portuguese.

INCT of Bioethanol
The INCT of Bioethanol aims to: improve productivity and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in cane sugar; developing the theoretical basis for the expression of hydrolases and other enzymes important in the degradation of cell wall and understand the action of these enzymes on cell wall polysaccharides; and characterize microorganisms produce enzymes with enhanced high performance for both digest cell wall polysaccharides as to ferment pentose sugars such as oligosaccharides and productivity; transfer the knowledge produced through affirmative actions for communication with other INCTs, scientific community, industry and society, and dissemination in popular magazines, newspapers, books, magazines and websites; provide information to allow double the production of bioethanol in Brazil in 10 years.

INCT of Stem Cells in Human Genetic Diseases
The National Institute of Science and Technology of Stem Cells in Human Genetic Diseases is associated with the Center for Human Genome Studies, the largest center for studies on genetic diseases of Latin America. Its mission is to establish a bank of stem cells from patients with genetic diseases, acting as a global reference center for research and a bank of DNA old health men. The Institute will also provide education and training for professionals in the use of stem cells in research and in therapeutic approaches.

The Institute’s objective is to raise the level of knowledge, competence and quality about developing critical embedded systems in Brazil. Among its specific goals is the development of research for the construction of critical embedded systems with emphasis on autonomous air, land, water and underwater vehicles. The mission of this new Institute is to develop fundamental and applied science, advance technology in optical and promote a broad interdisciplinary collaboration that enables modernization and development in various locations, technical and scientific sectors of the country. Also, will continue with an extensive program of international collaboration that will allow researchers to constantly update with the latest advances in the topics developed in this Institute.
One of the most important goals will be conducting an internal exchange of students graduate. All students belonging to units that are part of this proposal will have access to the infrastructure and equipment of the various laboratories involved. With this, it generates an actual synergism and national cooperation necessary for all existing infrastructure can be widely used.
