Laboratory of Studies of Mechanisms of β cell death

Research lines

At LEMMCβ, we aim to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in β cell dysfunction and death leading to the development of Diabetes mellitus (DM). Different transcription factors and signaling pathways are involved in these alterations observed in β cells and contribute to the development of the disease.

Currently, we are conducting three research lines. First, evaluating the effects of NADPH oxidase isoenzymes, which plays an important role in oxidative stress and in insulin secretion capacity in β cells. Second, we study the role of the transcription factor HNF-4α in β cell function and viability. Finally, the third aims to understand the mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects of physical exercise in preserving β cells in T1DM animal models.
