Tornar a oferta de gás natural mais robusta e prover subsídios científicos para a reversão de norma da ANP que impede ETEs e aterros sanitários de injetar seu biometano na rede são alguns dos objetivos do projeto.
Pesquisadores do Instituto de Energia e Ambiente (IEE) da Universidade de São Paulo estão mapeando a produção de biogás e biometano nos aterros sanitários, estações de tratamento de esgoto (ETEs) e de resíduos animais e agroindustriais em todo o Estado de São Paulo. O projeto é uma iniciativa do Centro de Pesquisa para Inovação em Gás Natural (Research Centre for Gas Innovation – RCGI) e tem o objetivo propor novas formas de tornar a oferta do gás natural mais robusta.
O biogás tem entre 50% e 60% de metano, sendo os outros 40% compostos por CO2 e mais alguns poucos elementos. Trata-se de um gás combustível, que pode ser usado em motores a combustão e afins. “O biogás pode ser usado em forma bruta, ou pode passar por um processo de purificação pelo qual se obtém só o metano. É o que se chama de biometano. Ele substitui o gás natural com as mesmas características, com a vantagem de ser de origem renovável. Além disso, pode ser injetado na rede de gás natural, pois a composição do GN é 80% a 90% metano”, explica a engenheira química Suani Teixeira Coelho, que coordena o projeto.
No âmbito dos resíduos agroindustriais, os pesquisadores têm especial interesse no biogás produzido a partir da vinhaça nas usinas de cana. Trata-se de um subproduto da destilação do etanol, produzido em grandes quantidades: são obtidos de 8 a 12 litros de vinhaça por litro de etanol destilado. “É uma matéria prima abundante e, por isso, em nossa opinião, o maior potencial do Estado para produção de biogás e biometano”, avalia a engenheira. Atualmente, a maior parte da vinhaça produzida no Estado é usada como nutriente nas plantações.
Segundo ela, os setores que podem alavancar a oferta do biogás, como o sucro-alcooleiro e o agronegócio, são conservadores. “Precisamos mostrar a eles o potencial real: o quanto se pode produzir, o quanto se substitui de gás natural com o uso do biogás, o quanto se pode gerar de eletricidade, o quanto se pode economizar de diesel em máquinas agrícolas ao substituir o diesel pelo biogás ou biometano e assim por diante”, exemplifica.
Dentro de um ano, a equipe do IEE pretende entregar esse mapeamento dos produtores. O projeto todo tem duração prevista de cinco anos. “Queremos saber se eles estão perto da rede de gasodutos, quanto produzem e o que isso representa na matriz energética do Estado”, diz. “A partir daí vamos discutir a política de regulação e a parte econômica: quanto custa para gerar, se seria um mercado livre ou teríamos tarifas, qual a infraestrutura necessária e as normas regulatórias adequadas.”
Mudança na lei – Outra meta do projeto é tentar rediscutir uma normativa da Agência Nacional de Petróleo e Gás (ANP), que recentemente proibiu a injeção, na rede, do biometano oriundo de aterros sanitários e ETEs. Isso porque o biometano oriundo de aterros e ETEs tem um componente chamado siloxano (uma mistura de sílica, oxigênio e metano), derivado de produtos como pasta de dente, creme de barbear e cosméticos em geral.
“Sabemos que é possível separar esse siloxano. Nosso grupo já estudou isso, em um projeto conjunto com a Sabesp há mais de quinze anos. Naquela época já se conseguia separar o siloxano sem problema algum. Queremos mostrar que não há motivo para proibir a injeção, na rede, do biometano de ETEs e de aterros”, afirma. “Há um potencial enorme de biometano proveniente de aterros e de ETEs. O que precisa ser feito é estipular especificações para o produtor que quiser colocar seu biometano na rede.”
