Publication with participation of Post-doctoral student and PPgSUS professor receives – Estadão 2021 – Voices of Mobility award

The publication “Andar a pé eu vou: caminhos para a defesa da causa no Brasil”, developed under the Como Anda project, receives the Estadão 2021 – Voices of Mobility award.
The work had the participation of post-doctoral fellow and PPgSUS teacher, Dr. Silvia Stuchi and Profa Dr. Sonia Paulino, contributing with the insertion of the perspective of social innovation, linked to public services.

Social innovation has been used as a denominator for different types of collective actions and social transformations that would take us from a “top down” economy and society to a more participatory and “bottom up” society (Moulaert et al, 2013; Ardill and Oliveira, 2018). A succinct definition of social innovation points to innovations buoyed by their (social) goals to improve the well-being of individuals or communities (Moulaert et al. 2007, Moulaert; MacMallum 2019, Djellal and Gallouj 2012). Their occurrence requires protagonism of third sector organizations, groups or social movements that ensure that society is the beneficiary to take ownership of the innovation outcomes (Desmarchelier et al., 2020a, 2020b). These include regional and local urban transformations (Windrum et al., 2016).
The experiences presented in the publication can be seen as social innovation opportunities linked to public services, focused on walking mobility, provided to society and focusing on the occupation of the disputed urban road space by pedestrians.
The opportunities for social innovation considered in the cases Paulista Aberta, Áreas 40 and Rua Completa are shown in the requalification and availability to society, on predetermined days and times, of urban spaces previously densely occupied by motor vehicles, for use by pedestrians and cyclists. On the other hand, the initiatives Calçadas do Brasil and Calçada Cilada, even if they do not reach at least the stage of occasional and/or temporary introduction of public services modified to serve pedestrians, clearly exemplify some fundamental aspects for the configuration of opportunities for social innovation in public services: protagonism of third sector organizations, evidence of citizens’ interests and interaction with the public sector.
The approach focused on the link between innovation in services and social innovation allows us to understand innovation processes and results. The focus on innovation processes emphasizes the forms of participation of the agents of service innovation for active mobility.
