Main Projects

Dempster laboratory develops research in the area of environment, biotechnology, and clinic. The main research projects are:

– 1. INCT-CEPEMA;

– 2. Recovery of degraded areas contaminated with metals – VALE-BNDES-DEQUSP;

– 3. FAPESP Thematic Project: CEPEMA – Cooperative Center for Environmental Engineering.

Among the main lines of research the group has been working on are:

– Proteomic studies in microorganisms (fungi, bacteria, and microalgae) aiming to identify environmental biomarkers as well as assist in the search for bioremediation processes in environments contaminated with heavy metals, for example, that are low-cost, economically viable and ecologically correct.

– Identification of possible metabolites as biomarkers in order to contribute to the understanding of the highest incidence, early and severe, of periodontal disease in patients with Down Syndrome.

– Identification and interpretation of the function of salivary metabolites and urine in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and its possible association with periodontal disease.

– Study of the influence of different stages of microalgae cultivation as well as of different parameters of analysis of MALDI-TOF-MS aiming the development of a database library containing the protein profile of these microorganisms, purposing at a later rapid identification by comparison with patterns stored in databases (fingerprint).
