According to the Regulation of the Graduate Program in Industrial Biotechnology:

Item V – FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Students, both MSc and PhD candidates, should demonstrate proficiency in English.

The proficiency assessment will be carried out by a committee appointed by the CCP, composed of three full advisors of the Program.

V.1 For the MSc candidates, the exam will consist of the interpretation of a text written in English, being allowed the use of a dictionary. A minimum grade of five will be required in the exam.

V.2 For the PhD candidates, the exam will consist of the interpretation of a text written in English and the preparation of a summary in English from a text written in Portuguese, being allowed the use of a dictionary. A minimum grade of five will be required in each part of the exam.

V.3 For both, MSc and PhD candidates, other Proficiency Examinations such as TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge, accomplished up to five (5) years before the maximum period established (item V.7), may be accepted, at the discretion of the examining committee. The supporting documents must be presented in the original or certified copy.

For approval, the MSc candidate requires a minimum grade of 50%, and the PhD candidate requires a minimum grade of 60%.

V.4 To foreign students, in addition to proficiency in English, proficiency in Portuguese is also required, which is demonstrated by the preparation of a summary in Portuguese from a text written in English, on topics in the area of ​​biotechnology, being allowed the use of a dictionary. A minimum grade of five will be required in the exam.

V.5 Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, CELPE-BRAS, intermediate or higher level, may be accepted for both MSc and PhD candidates.

V.6 To the foreign student who demonstrates the Portuguese language proficiency in the Master’s course, this examination will not be required in the Doctorate’s course.

V.7 Students should demonstrate proficiency in English and/or Portuguese within 15 (fifteen) months for the Master’s course, 20 (twenty) months for the Doctorate’s course and 24 (twenty-four) months for the Direct Doctorate’s course.
