Addresses the characterization and the mechanisms involved in the processes of pretreatment of plant biomass. The modeling and the simulation of chemical and biological phenomena are used as tools for the development of systems and equipments.

Production, Characterization and Purification of Biomolecules:
The objective of this line is the development of technologies for obtaining, extracting and purifying biomolecules of industrial and pharmaceutical interest. Also addresses the use of enzymes in biocatalytic processes.

Development of Fermentation Processes:
It aims at the development of bioprocesses to obtain products (ethanol, xylitol, among others) and fermented foods. Also addresses studies on the isolation and characterization of microorganisms with probiotic properties.

Characterization and Treatment of Industrial Effluents:
Addresses the characterization and the physical, chemical and biological treatment of industrial effluents and the study of the toxicity associated with the structure of the substances present, aiming at their remediation.

Use of Agro-Industrial Wastes:
In this line, studies are focused on the use of the main organic fractions (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) of different lignocellulosic materials and their hydrolysates in biochemical or chemical processes.
