Production, purification and characterization of ligninolytic and xylanolytic enzymes of microorganisms. Deconstruction of the cell wall of agricultural residues. Determination of the xylan composition of different species of plants with the objective of developing new technologies to separate and fractionate them, aiming their application.

Projects of dissertation and thesis:

– Functional elucidation of enzymes with potential application in the conversion of vegetal biomass;

– Study of the interaction among cellulolytic enzymes and phenolic compounds;

– Extraction of xylans from lignocellulosic materials pretreated by chemical and enzymatic methods;

– Characterization of xylans and the cellulosic residue obtained from sugarcane bagasse pre-treated with alkaline sulfite;

– Evaluation of extracted xylans as potential inputs for the pulp and paper industry.

Areas of Interest:

The current research work of our group is focused on the development of a thematic project supported by FAPESP entitled “Recalcitrance of sugarcane biomass: Fundamentals related to cell wall formation, pre-treatment and enzymatic digestion, applied in the development of new models of biorefineries “.

The project aims to generate integrated knowledge about the origins of recalcitrance of sugarcane biomass and, based on this knowledge, to design innovative processes of biomass conversion within the contemporary concept of biorefineries.

Topics of current interest (2016-2020) for dissertation and thesis projects include:

– Study of the formation of secondary cell walls in sugarcane as a function of the stage of maturation of the plants;

– Application of UV microscopy to evaluate the lignification process and fluorescence microscopy to evaluate the deposition of hemicellulose.

– Evaluation of the sucrose accumulation and the direct digestibility of sugarcane biomass by commercial enzymes.

– Design of bioprocesses for the conversion of sugarcane biomass into products of technological interest within the contemporary context of biorefineries.

– Search for new hydrolytic enzymes from the study of the secretomics of wood-degrading basidiomycetes, aiming the development of specific enzymatic mixtures for each type of lignocellulosic material.

Biochemical processes, bioreactors applied to the conversion of biomass and design of reactors and processes. The research work has been performed in topics as development of reactors for pretreatment of biomass (including hydrodynamic cavitation systems) and of bioreactors to obtain different products by fermentation, as ethanol, biopolymers (e.g. pullulan), xylitol and biopigments.
