Priority Topic 1 – Translational Plant and Animal Sciences (TPAS)
Brazil presents the most developed system of research and training of human resources in the area of tropical agriculture. Agricultural research practically started the Brazilian postgraduate programs, allowing unprecedented advances in both the production system and the veterinary sciences and system sustainability. Today Brazil is one of the main food producers in the world, accounting for more than 44% of Brazilian exports, employing more than 18 million workers, moving around 540 billion reais in 2017. This result is the result of an intense and qualified system of science and technology installed in the country, structured, above all, into a postgraduate network of excellence. The proposed project integrates a high level basic science, internationally recognized, with the development of solutions to the problems of the field. The researches involve aspects related to the development of a more sustainable production system to researches that aim to adapt the plants to different types of stresses biotic and abiotic. Aiming at the best development of priority themes, such as food quality and safety, characterization of food components, study of nutrient and bioactive effects, process engineering, biotechnology and microbiology in industry, as well as technologies emerging countries, it is necessary to invest in the expansion and consolidation of internationalization focused on these areas. Biological diversity in Brazil is one of the largest in the world, which puts the country in a privileged position to develop the capacity for rational and sustainable use of its biological heritage. In contemporary society, such capacity passes through the formation of human resources based on solid and updated theoretical and practical, critical thinking and autonomy. Since its inception internationalization has been one of the main axes of PPGs within this thematic area. The project seeks to stimulate the dual degrees of USP students and universities abroad so that the research stage in a reference institution is a fundamental feature of the proposal. It is also intended to attract high-level researchers (seniors or young talents) to act more directly in the co-orientation of students, offer of intensive courses and international seminars, in addition to enabling workshops among institutions to strengthen interaction between students and researchers.
