GIORGIO DE TOMI – DIRECTOR

Mining Engineer from the University of São Paulo, with a PhD from Imperial College (UK) and MSc from Southern Illinois University (USA). He is a Professor at the Polytechnic School of USP and head of the Research Center for Responsible Mining at USP (NAP.Mineração / USP). Between 2015 and 2019 he served as Head of the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at EPUSP. He has international qualifications as QP (Qualified Person) and CP (Competent Person), acts as an advisor to UNIDO and UNEP and coordinates projects with the World Bank in the area of sustainability in mining. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) by the Engineering Council (UK), Fellow at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM), PQ researcher level -D at CNPq, advisor and member of the technical committee of CBRR (Brazilian Commission of Resources and Reserves) , member of the board of the EMBRAPII Tecnogreen Unit and serves on the editorial board of the journals Mining Technology and Brasil Mineral.

Area of Expertise: Mining planning, economic evaluation of mining projects, automation for the mineral industry, management of the mineral value chain, with an emphasis on the dissemination of responsible practices for the mineral sector. He has experience in the industry, having worked as a mining engineer and head of production at the company Goiás Estanho (Brazil, 1980s), as Director and Board Member of Datamine International (UK, 1990s) and Director and Board Member of Devex SA (Brazil, until 2010).

ARTHUR PINTO CHAVES – COUNSELOR

Graduated in Metallurgical Engineering (1969), Master in Mineral Technology (1972), Ph.D. (1983), Associate Professor (1989), Full Professor (1992), all from the University of São Paulo. Postdoctoral at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale-USA. He is currently an MS-6 collaborator professor at the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at EPUSP. In the past, he was a junior engineer at IPT, advisor to the IPT board, Mineral Processes Manager at Paulo Abib Engenharia S/A, Planning and Development Manager at Brumadinho Companies, Operations and Market Manager at Promon Engenharia and MS-5 collaborating professor at Institute of Geosciences of the State University of Campinas. Has experience in Mining Engineering, with an emphasis on Ore Treatment, acting on the following subjects: clean technology, beneficiation, mineral technology, ore treatment and flotation.


Area of Expertise: Ore Treatment / Handling of granular solids.

JORGE SILVA BETTENCOURT – COUNSELOR

Graduated in Geology from the University of São Paulo (1961), Ph.D. (1972) and Associate Professor (1992) from the University of São Paulo. He has been a full collaborator at the Geosciences Institute of the University of São Paulo since 2000. Experience in mineral exploration and mineral deposit models, acting as a mineral exploration geologist and consultant. Current interest in research, more directed to metallogeny and mineral exploration, focuses on the themes: Amazon craton and São Francisco Basin, proterozoic crustal evolution and metallogenetic modeling of mineral deposits -rare metals and non-ferrous metals- with an emphasis on stable isotopes and fluid inclusions. He is a productivity researcher at CNPq – level 1A. Co-Chairman of IGCP-426: Granite Systems and Proterozoic Lithospheric Processes (UNESCO/IUGS, 1998-2003). He has the Barlow Memorial Medal granted in 2002 by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and, in 2004, he received the José Bonifácio de Andrade e Silva Medal from the Brazilian Society of Geology.
 
 

MAURÍCIO BERGERMAN – COUNSELOR

Graduated in Mining Engineering from the University of São Paulo (2003), Master in Mineral Engineering from the University of São Paulo(2009) and Ph.D. in Mineral Engineering from the University of São Paulo(2013). He worked for 7 years at Vale S.A. in the Sossego and Pico mines and in the area of new copper projects, always in the process area. He worked as an Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Alfenas between 2011 and 2014. Since 2014 he has been a PhD Professor at the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at the University of São Paulo. He has experience in copper, iron, zinc, lead, phosphate, vanadium, titanium ores projects and materials for civil construction and waste recycling, having developed his master’s degree in the area of semi-autogenous grinding and his doctorate in regrinding with vertical mills. It also works in the pre-concentration area, having developed studies to evaluate different ore deposits in Brazil. It has applied for a patent for the development of an innovative route to extract uranium from a sulphide copper ore.

VAGNER ROBERTO ELIS – COUNSELOR

Graduated in Geology (1990), Master in Geosciences and Environment (1993) and Doctorate in Geosciences and Environment from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1999). Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo (2019). He is currently Associate Professor 1 and Head of the Department of Geophysics at IAG / USP. He has experience in Geosciences, working mainly on the following subjects: applied geophysics, shallow geophysics, geoelectric methods, environmental investigation, geophysics applied to hydrogeology, geophysics applied to mining.

JORGE LUIS PORSANI – COUNSELOR

Graduated in Geology from UFBA (1987), Master in Geophysics from UFPA (1991), Ph.D. in Geosciences and Environment from UNESP in Rio Claro (1999) and post-doctorate in Geophysics from Western Michigan University, United States (2005). Professor of the Department of Geophysics at IAG since 1998, Associate Professor from 2009 to 04/2015. Since 05/2015 he has been a Full Professor at the University of São Paulo. CNPq Researcher since 2007, 1D Researcher from 2010-2018 and is currently a 1C Researcher. He was head of the Department. of Geophysics at IAG/USP between 05/2009 and 05/2013. He is currently the President of the Research Committee of the IAG / USP. In 2002 he implemented the Controlled Site of Geophysics Rasa-SCGR-I of the IAG / USP with the support of FAPESP and in 2016 he implemented the SCGR-II with the support of COMGÁS. He has consulted for PETROBRAS, ANEEL, METRÔ-Consórcio Via Amarela, PETROGAL and COMGÁS. He coordinated R&D Projects for CNPq-PVE and FAPESP. He has supervised several research projects in Scientific Initiation, Undergraduate, Master’s, Doctorate and Post-Doctoral Conclusion Papers. He worked in humanitarian geophysical work to optimize searches in the region affected by the collapse of the Vale dam in Brumadinho, MG. He has dozens of articles published in refereed journals. He has experience in the field of Geosciences, with an emphasis on Geophysics Applied to geological, geotechnical, environmental, hydrogeological, mineral exploration, urban planning and archeology studies. He works on the following topics: GPR-Ground Penetrating Radar, TDEM-Time Domain Electromagnetic, MT- Magnetotelluric and Electroresistance.
