Laboratories
RESEARCH LABORATORIES AND DENTAL CLINICS
The Program has 9 laboratories under the responsibility of Program faculty members from the Children’s Clinic Department, 7 laboratories under the responsibility of Program advisors who are not from the Children’s Clinic Department, 17 laboratories of collaborators from other Departments of FORP/USP and other USP Units and other Universities in Brazil and abroad. There are also 4 spaces to support Research at FORP/USP.
The following is a description of the laboratories under the responsibility of Program faculty members from the Children’s Clinic Department of FORP/USP and which have the technical support of 8 employees.
- HISTOLOGY LABORATORY
The laboratory performs histotechnical processing of samples from research conducted on mice, rats, dogs and humans, and obtains histological slides, in addition to conventional staining. Research projects are being developed with the participation of national and International researchers. There is a permanent higher education laboratory Specialist employee. The operation of this laboratory is financed with funds from USP, FAPESP, CAPES (PROEX) and CNPq.
- MICROSCOPY LABORATORY
Histopathological analyses of in vivo studies are performed and photomicrographs are obtained. It has two Zeiss optical microscopes with an AxioCam HRc color digital camera and software for capturing and analyzing images for bright field and fluorescence. There is a permanent laboratory technician who has a PhD degree. Research projects are being developed with the participation of national and International researchers. The operation of this laboratory is financed with funds from USP, FAPESP, CAPES (PROEX) and CNPq.
- LABORATORY FOR STUDYING THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMCICAL PRODUCTS OF DENTAL SUBSTRATES AND DENTAL MATERIALS
In vitro studies are conducted on the mechanical properties of materials (tensile, microtensile, microhardness, surface roughness, marginal microleakage, profilometry, shear strength and microshear, among others), under different experimental conditions, with or without the use of laser, using bovine and human teeth (deciduous and permanent). The laboratory has a There is a permanent specialist member staff in the laboratory who has a higher education degree. This laboratory has been maintained with funding from CAPES (PROEX) and FAPESP.
- MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND CELL CULTURE LABORATORY.
Molecular biology techniques are performed, including real-time PCR (RT-PCR), Western blotting, spectrophotometry and immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, in addition to cell culture assays (lineages and stem cells) to evaluate the expression of different genes and genetic polymorphisms, protein levels and detection of microorganisms. The laboratory possesses the permanent support of a laboratory technician and a laboratory specialist, both with higher education qualifications. Research projects are being developed with the participation of national and International researchers. The operation of this laboratory has been financed with funds from USP, FAPESP, CAPES (PROEX) and CNPq.
- ORTHODONTICS CLINICAL RESEARCH LABORATORY
It is intended to develop clinical research activities and in vitro studies in the Orthodontics/Pediatric Dentistry interface, in addition to multidisciplinary studies in the areas of Anatomy, Physiology, Otorhinolaryngology, Radiology, Medical Physics and Speech Therapy. The research projects are being developed with the participation of national and International researchers. The operation of this laboratory has been financed with funds from USP, FAPESP and CAPES (PROEX).
6.ORTHODONTICS TEACHING AND RESEARCH LABORATORY
It is equipped to manufacture orthodontic appliances and conduct research on the Orthodontics/Pediatric Dentistry interface. It also has a teaching space for oral presentations by Professors, a scanner (iTero), Dolphin software and 3dSlice software for research with tomography scans and treatment simulators. This laboratory has been maintained with funding from USP, FAPESP, CAPES (PROEX) and support from the American aligner company Invisalign.
- CEPHALOMETRICS LABORATORY
Equipped with negatoscopes, a multimedia projector and computers, this laboratory is used for presenting seminars and studying clinical cases and using specific software (such as Dolphin) for registering, storing, processing and analyzing images and performing computerized cephalometric tracings.
- COHORT STUDIES LABORATORY
Quantitative and qualitative database analysis of cohort studies, specifically the BRISA cohort, is performed in collaboration with the Ribeirão Preto Medical School of the University of São Paulo and the Federal University of Maranhão. This cohort constitutes of a robust longitudinal database, with information collected since pregnancy. This cohort is funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Health (DECIT-MS), the Maranhão Foundation for Research and Scientific and Technological Development (FAPEMA), FAPESP, CNPq and the Bill & Melina Gates Foundation. This laboratory also performs statistical analyses of projects under development in the Program.
- CLINICAL RESEARCH LABORATORY IN PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
This is a support laboratory for the development of clinical research and in vitro studies in the area of Pediatric Dentistry and related areas such as Special Patients, Dental Traumatology and Complementary Therapies.
The following is a description of the laboratories under the responsibility of the Program’s advisors who are not part of the Children’s Clinic Department:
- FORP/USP DENTAL RESEARCH LABORATORY
The laboratory has metallographic cutters and polishers, an optical microscope, a confocal microscope, a stereomicroscope, microhardness testers, a roughness tester, thermal and mechanical cycling machines, a brushing machine, a pH meter and agitators, among others, for both sample preparation and analysis. It has a specialist technician who has a PhD. The laboratory has financial support from CNPq and FAPESP. It is under the responsibility of Professor Regina Guenka Palma Dibb.
- FORP/USP LASER RESEARCH LABORATORY
It is equipped with various high and low power laser equipment, such as the Er:YAG laser, Er, Cr:YSGG laser, Nd:YAG laser, CO2 laser, diode laser and Diagnodent. It also has an automatic laser scanning machine and power meters. This laboratory performs work in which the preparation and treatment of different dental substrates is performed with laser as well as clinical work that uses laser. Thereis a specialist technician who has a PhD degree. This laboratory has financial support from CNPq and FAPESP. It is under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Silmara Corona.
- “PROF. DR. HEITOR PANZERI” RESEARCH LABORATORY AT FORP/USP
This laboratory performs tests and analyses of different biomaterials with an emphasis on the development of innovative materials and quality control of dental materials available in specialized stores, with the help of equipment linked to the Multi-User Center – LaABio-Multi. There is a specialized technician and financial support from CNPq and FAPESP. It is under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Fernanda Panzeri.. P/USP
- FORP/USP ORAL HISTOPATHOLOGY LABORATORY
This laboratory is used to perform routine diagnostic oral histopathology tests for SUS patients from the Unit and other public services. It also conducts research in Oral Pathology. There is a specialized technician and financial support from CNPq and FAPESP. It is under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Jorge León.
- ORAL IMMUNOPATHOLOGY LABORATORY AND GENETIC ANALYSIS AT FORP/USP
This laboratory is used in the development of immunohistochemical analysis and in situ hybridization in various research projects in Oral Pathology. There is a specialized technician and financial support from CNPq and FAPESP. It is under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Jorge León.
- FCFRP/USP IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY LABORATORY
Studies are performed in cell cultures as well as microscopic analyses and molecular biology techniques for in vivo studies, evaluating cellular mechanisms that occur during infectious and inflammatory processes induced by pulp and periodontal pathologies. It has the support of a specialized technician and financial support from FAPESP. It is under the responsibility of Professor Dr. Sandra Fukada.
- FCFRP/USP MICROBIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORIES
The laboratory develops microbial culture, indirect immunofluorescence and histomicrobiology techniques in collaboration with national and International researchers. It has the financial support of CAPES, FAPESP and CNPq and the support of a specialized technician. It is under the responsibility of Professor Dr. Carolina Aires.
