ASD

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by varying levels of changes in social interaction and communication, associated with restricted interests, in addition to sensory changes.

These manifestations can cause difficulties in performing oral hygiene and dental care, due to the difficulty of behavioral management, creating an increased risk of oral diseases in children with ASD.

Therefore, children with ASD require multidisciplinary approaches, including behavioral management focused on the dental care environment. However, there is a shortage of dental services made up of multidisciplinary teams aimed at serving this public, leading to an increase in rates of dental caries and oral diseases, triggering more sensory changes and behavioral impairments in these children, who then tend to not cooperate. during dental care.

In this sense, a multidisciplinary behavioral approach aimed at education and promotion of oral health is necessary, favoring adaptation to the dental environment, strengthening the quality and effectiveness of home oral hygiene with a view to reducing the number of restorative interventions and damage to oral health .

Therefore, our proposal for this project is to implement a multidisciplinary care program aimed at the behavioral management of children with ASD, aiming at professional training, extension and research. Training will be carried out for a multidisciplinary team, through lectures and constant practical training and services aimed at promoting health, carried out at the Special Patients clinic of the Department of Children’s Clinic. This project will be carried out with the participation of professors from the Discipline of Pediatric Dentistry (FORP) and Bioinformatics (FFCLRP) and will feature professionals from the areas of: Neuropediatrics, Neuropsychology, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and Psychology. In addition, there will be the participation of a Dental Surgeon working in the care service for children with special needs (FORP), volunteer undergraduate students and scholarship holders (PUB) and volunteer Postgraduates, who will receive training to provide care to guardians and children with special needs. ASD and other behavioral difficulties disorders. Professional training as well as services will be carried out by the multidisciplinary team through face-to-face consultations, complemented by teleguidance in oral health, using different behavioral management techniques.

The scientific knowledge generated will be disseminated to the scientific community, nationally and internationally, and to society.
