Dental Trauma

Dental trauma care service of the Pediatric Dentistry discipline at   FORP/USP

The Pediatric Dentistry discipline created the “Dental Trauma Care Service” in 2010 at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of São Paulo.  The objective being to provide access to dental treatment for children affected by dental trauma and establishing mechanisms for surveillance related to education, preventation and control as well as developing studies and instituting preventative actions in the community.

Since the creation of this service, it has been possible to establish a database containing information on various topics related to dental trauma. These include the main causes of the trauma, the most frequent types of trauma, and the prevalence in different age groups, among others. In this way, the data obtained serves for the wider dissemination of information related to dental trauma based on scientific knowledge.

In this knowledge area, studies are being carried out with the aim of identifying (1) the most frequent types of dental trauma in primary and permanent dentition (2) the social determinants involved with dental trauma in children, and  (3) the impact of dental trauma on the quality of life of the patients and their families.

An average of 35 patients per week is seen to in the Dental Trauma Care Service. Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Professors participate in the program as well as Post-graduate students in Pediatric Dentistry, 3 dental surgeons, and one assistant. They are all contracted by the unit.
