Departamento de Parasitologia – ICB

LABORATORIES

The Department of Parasitology offers opportunities for transdisciplinary learning experience, combining laboratory and field. Faculty members have their individual laboratories suitable for development of research and for advising undergraduate students who are initiating scientific research and graduate students.

The multi-user laboratories house large equipment for collective use, such as fluorescent microscopes and photomicroscopes with image processing and refrigerated ultracentrifuges. The Department also has two rooms for pathogen culture with biosafety level 2 (NB-2) and a lab with biosafety level 3 (NB-3), all approved by CTNBio .

In addition, we use the new CENTRO DE FACILIDADES PARA PESQUISA – CEFAP (Facility Center for Research) set up by ICB-USP in 2011. The CEFAP has laboratories for Cellular Culture and Confocal Multiphoton Microscopy; Flow Cytometry and Cellular Separation; large-scale DNA Genome and Sequencing; and Proteomics and mass spectrometry.

The Department of Parasitology keeps animal facilities for breeding and maintaining isogenic mice and Ko, sanitary and genetic control laboratory (LCS), in addition to an insectary for breeding and experimenting with diptera, triatomines and ticks. It also houses the largest existing biological collection of trypanosomatids in the world, which gathers more than 200 organisms classified according to biological, morphological and molecular criteria.
