Promoted by Fapesp and by the Research Council of Norway, the event will discuss the development of new production systems, efficient use and distribution of energy.
On September 21, the academic director of the Research Centre for Gas Innovation – RCGI, Professor Júlio Meneghini will participate in the seminar Energy for the Future (http://fapesp.br/eventos/eff), organized by the State of São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) and by the Research Council of Norway. The seminar is going to present and to discuss themes for cooperation in future researches on the production, distribution and use of energy among Brazilian and Norwegian institutions.
Access to energy is important in all the areas of society and the demand has been continually growing worldwide. Environmental and climate challenges require a quick transition to the production and use of renewable energy resources. However, concurrently, the world is known to be dependent on fossil fuels for many years to come. Meneghini will participate in an evening session named Oil and Gas Related Research, presenting the RCGI projects and discussing the new technologies for the offshore production of oil and gas.
“I am going to talk about the great challenges we have in the pre-salt, among which oil and gas exploration in ultra-deep seas (over 2,500 metres deep); devising pipelines that transport oil and gas from the well to the platform; devising power production hubs offshore (technologies that allow generating power using natural gas to feed deep sea equipment and other platforms); the development of gas separators (methane and carbon dioxide); floating platforms for gas liquefaction, among others,” he advances.
According to him, all these challenges are objects of research in the RCGI, of the Escola Politécnica (School of Engineering) of the USP and of other institutions, such as the USP Institute of Oceanography. “We are all studying ways of producing and using natural gas wisely, generating electricity or energy with minimum emissions. This together with ways of using oil and gas as feedstock for the petrochemical industry, transforming them into other products, such as polymers, at the same time as we avoid emitting carbon into the atmosphere. Our mission is to make fossil fuels be used in a cleaner way, without damaging the environment and pursuing the zero-emission goal.”
