The Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI) is one of the leading applied research centres in energy transition and decarbonisation in Latin America, based at the University of São Paulo (USP). In 2025, the centre celebrated 10 years of activity, consolidating itself as one of the university’s most successful and internationalised research initiatives, bringing together more than 900 researchers and a portfolio of over 120 projects, of which 58 are currently active.
Recognised for its interdisciplinary and collaborative approach, the RCGI adopts the triple-helix model, integrating academia, government and industry in the development of innovative solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, nature-based solutions through agriculture and soil studies, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), low-carbon hydrogen, renewable energy and industrial sustainability. It also works in Advocacy, contributing to the standardisation and regulation of new technologies, as well as conducting studies and actions on their social perception and acceptance.
Created through a partnership between USP, FAPESP and Shell, the centre has significantly expanded its network of strategic partners in recent years, strengthening its connection with key decision-makers in the global energy sector.
With robust infrastructure, offices in São Paulo and Amsterdam, a strong international presence, six startups linked to its innovation ecosystem, and an annual energy transition event, the Energy Transition Research & Innovation (ETRI), which brings together approximately 800 participants, the RCGI stands out for its ability to transform scientific knowledge into technological, economic and social impact, actively contributing to global solutions related to energy, climate and sustainable development.
