A growing number of international organizations and consultancies are involved in designing and delivering low-carbon, climate-resilient development. They all face main challenges in the implementation of a low carbon economy in their particular field. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has as its main objective to develop international documents in all technical fields, such as requirements standards, specifications and guides, which can be used to consistently ensure that materials, products, processes and services are suitable for its purposes. In Brazil, ISO is represented by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).

More and more countries and economic agents, including the Oil and Gas Industry at the core, are implementing policies to reduce their emissions. We see strategies such as carbon pricing mechanisms and energy efficiency measures, as well as active encouragement to the research, development and deployment of low-carbon technologies. These new technologies are starting to make inroads into the energy markets, complementing and/or substituting the traditional fossil fuels. A well-balanced package of required standards, specifications and guides ought to be seen at the core of climate mitigation policy, because they might speed up or slow down the implementation and the needed broadening and deepening adoption of essential technologies.

Through the first project of Advocacy Programme, RCGI’s teams will be encouraged to understand and start facing the standardization issues related to their technological development from the beginning.
